Octo8  |  Backup & Retention

Backup built
to stand apart

Protected copies that stay separate from production, and data you can find when you need it.

Backups often live on the same platform, under the same administration, as the systems they protect. When production fails or is attacked, the copies can go with it. Octo8 designs backup and retention to stand apart from production by design, and to keep data for a reason.

Design principles

Three rules for copies you can trust

Separate from production

Protected copies sit on infrastructure and administration apart from production, so an incident in one is less likely to reach the other.

Locked against change

Copies are retained in a locked state for a set period. With NetApp, locked copies cannot be deleted during retention, even by storage administrators.

Kept for a reason

Retention follows your rules and how quickly data must be found. Data that is no longer required is retired, not stored indefinitely.

Maps and video

Large data, retrieved in the right order

GIS data and video archives are large and grow every year. They are retained by how often they are retrieved, and restored in the order the business needs them.

Maps
GIS and asset data
Current asset and parcel maps are restored first; historical layers follow.
Video
Inspection and public-safety video
Kept for the period your rules require, on storage priced for long retention, and retrievable on request.
Records
Documents and historical data
Retained by policy, locked where required, and retired at the end of the retention period.
How it works

The 4R Framework, applied to retention

Phase 01
Rationalize
Inventory what is backed up and retained today, where, and why.
Phase 02
Recover
Set retention and retrieval targets by data type. You approve them.
Phase 03
Repurpose
Move protected copies apart from production, and retire data kept without a reason.
Phase 04
Realize Value
Test a restore. Review retention as rules and systems change.
Delivered on

HPE Private Cloud and NetApp

Octo8 designs and stewards. Our technology partners deliver, operate, and support the infrastructure under their own service commitments.

HPE Private Cloud

Runs the services that must keep running, on private infrastructure sited in a colocation facility or a location you choose.

HPE or NetApp storage

Holds the protected copies. Choose HPE storage or NetApp, based on what you already run and prefer.

Octo8

Designs the environment, sizes the subscriptions, runs the tests, and right-sizes at every renewal. No infrastructure on our books.
